Pasta topped with meatballs simmered in meat sauce with warmed buttered baguette, salad, and double chunk brownies
January Reflection
Communication with Abbey: Abbey let me know that raffle kickoff was happening later in January, which is a big deal and very time consuming; each grade has a different theme and decorates their entire floor of the school in that theme to get everyone in the spirit of selling tickets. Because of this, she said that some people would be coming late since they were staying to help decorate which was fine—I was always very involved in raffle and completely understand the girls’ enthusiasm. She also let me know that everyone had made the meeting (those on student council left a few minutes early, as usual) and was planning on coming to the meal as well. I encouraged her again to try and pick some side dishes and dessert that we don’t normally do, just to give variety. Everyone is trying really hard to rotate who does the shopping for
Communication with Mrs. Keith and Joyce: I really didn’t have any questions or concerns to talk to Mrs. Keith about this week, so I just sent her a quick update of what we had done this month and a summary of how the girls worked together. I also let her know how much I think they are gaining from being a part of this project and how impressed I am with how they are each growing. I was not able to get ahold of Joyce again…I am realizing that the communication at Grace Place isn’t very strong, which is a little frustrating. I am determined to talk with Joyce soon so I can have an answer by next month and start working on getting the recipe book website-ready.
Meal: Abbey and Mackenzie came at the normal time and we unpacked the groceries and looked at what needed to be done. We started with the brownies just so they could be cooling for as long as possible, then just talked about how school was going and how the meetings and everything else with Grace Place was going for a while because all the other aspects of the meal were very quick and simple to cook. The other girls trickled in between a half hour and 45 minutes later except for Molly. Once everyone was there, we started the meatballs simmering in sauce then began cleaning the pans that we use to take the food. Molly called us shortly after and said she had needed to stop by the store and would pick everyone up Starbucks, which was really thoughtful! A little while later we cooked the pasta and baguette and once everything was cooked we packed up all the food and went to deliver it. Even though Abbey had called and spoke with someone (she didn’t just leave a voicemail), Grace Place still forgot that we were bringing them food this week—this kind of demonstrates my point of how the communication is not as strong as it could be. They were still very grateful for the meal and said they would just save what they had started to make for the next night.
Reflection: I was really impressed that all the girls showed up this time, even in the midst of raffle. It showed me that they consider this project really important and are taking a lot of responsibility towards it. I let them know how proud I was of them for managing their time and being able to participate in both events that were going on. They had planned well my picking a simpler meal since not everyone would be there to help in the beginning.
