Week 2 Research, Reflection and Goals
Notes: At the local potter’s studio I am working at, he does not mix his own clay but instead orders it from a supplier; the studio doesn’t have enough room for the mixer needed to mix clay in house. However, this is leaving me more time to experiment with mixing glazes and I am looking forward to trying some new recipes.
Research: The Potter’s Studio Clay and Glaze Handbook goes into detail about how clay is made, the components of it, and how to test different formulas, which I found really interesting and helpful. The Pottery Handbook of clay, glaze and colour seemed very outdated and had a lot of the same information on how clay is made and tips on glazing that The Potter’s Studio Clay and Glaze Handbook did, so I just skimmed through this one this week. The book did have an image of an agate mug (examples of technique shown below) that had the marbling effect of different colors that I would like to try, although the book itself didn’t go into great detail on how to achieve the effect. I plan to research more on agate work on my own next week. Again, I thought this book would have an array of clay and glaze recipes that I could test out on my own, but it did not. I don’t feel like I need to keep this book on hand or purchase my own copy, especially if I have The Potter’s Studio Clay and Glaze Handbook. Goals for the upcoming week: Mix and use the gloss red glaze recipe found in The Potter’s Studio Clay and Glaze Handbook (cone 10 reduction). |
