For my self-portrait, I chose to focus on what I have been spending the majority of my time at UC on, which is my art classes. Yes, my friends and family are beyond important to me but at this point working towards my fine arts degree is what I have been focusing on the most. The materials in my picture represent not only what we have been working on in my classes, but also what I enjoy doing. Photography is my main interest, and so it is obviously necessary to include my camera in this photo. The different colored paints and different sized brushes are in there because I enjoy painting, even though I'm not very good at it. Just because you're not the best at something you love, though, doesn't mean you shouldn't do it anymore; what's important is that it makes you happy. I also have various pencils for the drawing class that I am taking now. I love the bright colors of Sharpies and use them to decorate the outsides of envelopes whenever there is an occasion to give someone a card. I included my box cutter because for 3 years we had to cut mats with just an x-acto blade, and when we got the box cutters it made the job go a lot quicker and easier. I didn't mind using the blade, but some days having the box cutter and being able to breeze through cutting mats is really nice.
