Chicken, cheese and rice casserole with salad, bread, and homemade mini strawberry shortcakes
September Reflection
Communication with Abbey: Now that all the girls were back in school, they had a meeting before school started one day to discuss the meal for this month. Later that day (it was the Monday before the meal) Abbey called me and let me know how the meeting went and what they decided to make. Everyone was at the meeting but a couple girls had to leave early for other meetings—like I said, all of the girls are very involved with a variety of activities! Abbey also let me know who was going shopping; I reminded her about trying to use coupons and she said she would pass it along to Mackenzie and Molly (they did the shopping together). Each month I’ve been double checking with Abbey to make sure someone called Grace Place to confirm a date (usually this is Abbey, but I am trying to have her encourage some other girls to so it as well) and so far they have been able to get ahold of someone every time.
Communication with Mrs. Keith and Joyce: Since the girls had been in school for a couple weeks, I asked Mrs. Keith to double check and make sure that the girls’ service hours were being recorded correctly and she assured me that they were (I won’t really know for sure until the girls get their first report card—it lists how many hours they have). I also just gave her a quick update about the meal we did and how we were working together as a group. Abbey had told me that so far, most of the girls who went shopping didn’t care to be refunded so I passed this information along to Mrs. Keith and let her know we were grateful she was able to make funding available for us if we needed it. I was able to talk to Tory this month and let her know about my idea for putting recipes online, and she said she would have to talk to a couple other people before she was able to give me a final answer but it is looking good so far.
Meal: Abbey really liked this meal; it’s a recipe that her family uses a lot. All of the girls were there ecept for Roni (she was working)—I was a little disappointed since she had come to the meeting and until earlier that day Abbey had thought she was coming. I told Abbey not to worry about it too much since Roni missed because of work, and there’s not really much to do about that. I just said to remind Roni to let Abbey know at the meeting when her free days are for the month, if possible (I know some work places don’t do schedules more than a couple weeks ahead). The other girls worked really well together and remembered where a lot of the utensils and supplies were. They are so funny—they worry about getting milk and butter and things because they don’t want to use ours. I don’t mind if they use basic stuff like that, but I think it’s great they are so considerate! Some people wouldn’t even worry about things like that. It is a really great group of girls and I’m having a fun time working with them. The residents really like the homemade mini strawberry shortcakes that we made, so I typed up that recipe as well to put with the main dish recipe for this month. They were really easy to make, so I hope the residents will use the recipe often.
Reflection: I was really happy when Abbey told me that so far no one had wanted to be refunded; I think it shows that tge girls are really starting to learn what service means. I think they are learning a lot from this experience and are taking what they learned and applying it to other aspects of their lives. Each month I’ve been giving Abbey some healthy recipes for well-balanced meals that I have looked up and I’m thinking about adding some of those (or just the meal plan—main dish, two sides, dessert) to the cookbook and give those to Grace Place as well.
