Week 4 Research, Reflection and Goals
Notes: I feel like I was fairly successful last week in working with carving, but I think that next time I try it I will know how to throw the pieces better so that when I carve them the carving will be cleaner. One trick that I learned this week was that vinegar is pretty much magic when it comes in contact with clay and really helps in making lines look cleaner and helps to smooth out any cracks or crumbling areas. To the left I have images of a couple pieces that I did carving on (unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the work in progress and before it was glazed, so there are only images of the final product).
Research: The largest book that I had to go through was Surface Design for Ceramics, which I decided to start this week; I think it will take me a couple weeks to get through, and I think it is definitely the one that will interest me the most. Below are listed a few of the techniques I would like to go back and try and the page they were found on for easy reference. • Faceting (20) • Fluting (20) • Faceting with textured wire tools (22) • Faceting with a rib (23) • Band work with slip (26) • Brush chattering (29) • Slip trailing (32) • Feathering (34) • Marbling (35) • Wax resist (38) • Tape stencils (40) • Object resist (42) • Sponge stamping (48) • Inlay (53) • Impressing with soft clay (61) • Carving (69) • Piercing (70) • Burnishing (86) • Staining (95) • Wax sgraffito (100) • Raku firing (109) • Luster (119) The research for this week seems less than in other weeks, but in addition to reading through Surface Design for Ceramics I also did further research on the techniques mentioned above to better understand how to implement them in my own work. Goals for the upcoming week: Incorporate some of the special glaze effects found in The Potter’s Studio Clay and Glaze Handbook. |
