Project Information
I will need to decide on a theme for this group of photographs as well as how many prints I want to include in the “show”. I have a collection of over 1,000 photos already, so I plan to sort through those to start with and then decide what other photos I need to go out and take to supplement the rest of the collection. As a general rule of thumb, I don’t like to edit my photos so I won’t need to spend a ton of time editing, but will definitely need to crop the vast majority of my images to make them fit a standard print size. Once I have decided on my photos, I will need to choose sizes for each and if I would like to offer multiple sizes of prints, or just one option. This, as well as the number of photos I have, will depend partly on the size of the booth space (we usually get information in late March). Once I have decided on the images I want to use, I will have to order prints and find frames for each. At this point I think I would like the frames to be slightly different for some of the photos, but still look good together as a whole. I will also need to buy mat board and decide if I want to stick with white/gray/black mats or use color. I may decide to use neutral colors for most and pick one or two to do a colored mat for. I will then need to cut mats for each print (which requires a lot of precise measuring and careful cutting; it usually takes about 30-45 minutes per mat) and assemble the prints in the frame with the mats.
I will need to decide how I want to set up my booth and what the best way to display these prints will be. A large chunk of time will be spent setting up and manning the booth the day of the art fair. In addition, I plan to reflect weekly on the research that I have found and the progress I am making, along with any challenges or obstacles I am facing, throughout the planning process. I will not do a weekly reflection the week of the art fair, but a final reflection summarizing my findings and how I feel the day of the fair went. I will do this final reflection in addition to the required reflective essay. Below is a list of the number of hours I plan to spend on each component of this project.
Clearly and thoroughly address how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work:
With this project, I will learn how to competently put together a show of my photographic work and learn what makes a show successful or not successful. This is a really important skill for an artist to have as most active artists will participate in either solo or group exhibitions during their career.
2. Possess a well-developed awareness of theories and methods in the field
Through completing this project, I will need to be aware of the way that other photographers and artists price and present their work in order to make a profit. Both through the books/articles I plan to read and the other research I plan to do, I will learn what tactics and methods are successful and unsuccessful for a photographer attempting to sell their work.
B. I have a variety of books and websites that I plan to read and take notes on to aid me in my research for this project. Please see list below
Websites:
http://sproutingphotographer.com/photographer-pricing-8x10-print: This website will aid me in appropriately pricing my work.
http://www.danheller.com/biz-prints.html: This website will do the same as above, and also discusses how to sign and number prints to sell.
Alicia Cane had an e-book titled “Easy As Pie” regarding pricing for photographers, but it is no longer available on her website. I am going to continue looking online to see if I can find any copies or any place to download it as the summary I read made it seem like it would be extremely helpful. I did find a Q&A with her that I will probably refer to at the following site: http://mcpactions.com/2010/12/21/how-to-price-your-photography-qa-with-alicia-caine-easy-as-pie/
Selling Art Without Galleries by Daniel Grant is one book I definitely plan to read.
Pricing Photography: The Complete Guide to Assignment and Stock Prices by Michael Heron and David MacTavish is another book I plan to read for this project.

Jane was my high school art teacher and I have kept in contact with her since I graduated in 2012. One concentration of hers was ceramics, and I periodically meet with her to show her the work I have been doing since graduation. She is also a part of our community and is familiar with the College Hill Art Fair, and has had experience with planning art shows at McAuley High School.
