Sloppy joes with cheesy mashed potatoes, green beans, and cookies
December Reflection
Communication with Abbey: Even though all of the girls had a lot going on this month, most of them made it to the meeting; Abbey made it a little shorter than usual since everyone was so busy. They girls decided to do the meal earlier in the month to avoid the chaos of exams and winter break. Abbey let me know that Mackenzie wasn’t at the meeting because she overslept, and Molly had student council. Molly had let Abbey know the day before which dates were good for her, and when Mackenzie text Abbey that morning to say she was running late she let Abbey know which dates worked best for her as well. I was really glad to hear this because it shows the girls are taking this project seriously and being responsible.
Communication with Mrs. Keith and Joyce: Mrs. Keith was really impressed that the girls hadn’t turned in any of the receipts to be refunded yet, which I passed along to the girls when I saw them for the meal. I also sent Mrs. Keith the number of hours I had down that each girl had earned, and she responded back that they matched up with hers. Joyce was out again working with another home, so still no okay on the website recipes idea. It’s not a huge deal since I am typing up the recipes anyway—it will be very easy to put them online once I (hopefully) get the okay, I’m just anxious to find out if I will be able to or not.
Meal: The girls are really starting to get the hang of working together in a group efficiently and using the appliances in the kitchen. While we were cooking, I passed along the message from Mrs. Keith and also let them know I was happy with the amount of responsibility and commitment they have been showing towards this project. There was a minor issue when we went to deliver the meal when Mackenzie spilled some of the sloppy joe mix (it was a little too heavy for the aluminum pan we had it in and the sides had bowed), but not too much spilled and we were able to clean it up relatively quickly. Roni was not here again because of work; I am planning on texting or calling her soon to see if there is a way to work things out so that she can come to more of the meals because I think it is really disappointing that she is able to make it to the meetings and help plan but can’t be a part of making the meal.
Reflection: I’m really impressed with how well the girls worked together this week. Something else I enjoy witnessing that I hadn’t necessarily planned on happening is watching the friendships grow between this group of girls, even though they are from all different years at McAuley. I can tell they really look forward to making a meal both to visit with the residents of Grace Place they have come to know and to catch up with each other while they are cooking. Abbey is a really great leader and I am going to be sad that she won’t be a part of the group next year since she is graduating. I think everyone is really starting to understand how to plan a well-balanced meal and how to approximate portions so we purchase the right amount of food; I’m excited about how much they are learning through this experience and hope that it continues.
