Baked potato bar (bacon bits, cheese, sour cream, butter, chili) with salad and fruit
August Reflection
Communication with Abbey: Since school was still not in session yet, the girls decided to meet a little earlier in the day and plan the meal then go shopping for the supplies all together. They decided to do a baked potato bar this month, which was light and healthy. All the girls were there this month, including Roni (but she had to leave for work pretty soon after we started cooking).
Communication with Mrs. Keith and Joyce: Again, the girls weren’t back to school yet so I just gave Mrs. Keith a quick update and let her know we were definitely planning on continuing into the school year. She was really excited about the project since it is so close to McAuley, and she is really glad I am helping the girls get involved in their community. Abbey had called Grace Place early in the week to let them know when we would be bringing dinner, but when I tried to call the rest of the week their voicemail was full and the phone just kept ringing. When we delivered the meal, neither Joyce nor Tory was there—Joyce was working at another home and Tory hadn’t been there all day. When I asked for a day or time that I could reach one of them, none of the residents could give me an answer. Hopefully I will be able to get a hold of either Joyce or Tory next month.
Meal: The meal was really quick and easy to cook this week; basically all we had to do was cook the potatoes. Since we had a while, we chose to cook them in the oven instead of the microwave. The potatoes were also pretty inexpensive, so the girls got a lot of toppings to go with it to give the residents a nice variety and so they could pick what they wanted and how much. Since we had some extra time, we also filled out the girls service papers and talked about meal ideas and wrote them down to reference for the rest of the year. We had a lot of time to get to know each other and find out the extracurricular activities the girls are involved in—there is a lot of variety!
Reflection: I recorded the date, meal, and who was there again this month because I want to have all of the information together before I start putting the timeline together. There wasn’t really a “recipe” for this month, but I made a list of the toppings we added and made note of what temperature and how long to cook the potatoes for, since none of us knew and we had to look it up!
